Building Department Training the Week of March 5th

The week of March 5th is the annual International Code Council training in Colorado. Inspectors, plans examiners, code officials and construction industry representatives throughout the West participate.  All City of Aspen Building Department staff will be attending at various times during the week.  While there will be no interruptions to inspections and administrative staff will be available, Builder of the Day assistance will be very limited, and the Permit Coordinators will not be available Wednesday, March 7 through Friday, March 9.

Also, our Permit Coordinator, Ben Chase, has accepted an inspector’s position in North Bend, WA.  While we are excited for Ben’s new career opportunity and wish him all the best, we will be short staffed until we are able to hire another Permit Coordinator.  Karla and John have assumed responsibility for Ben’s permits.  Please call the Building Department’s main line at 970-920-5090, ext. 2 if you have any questions about your permit.

2018 Miscellaneous Code Update

City Council and the Planning Department are working on a series of amendments to the Land Use Code, and your input is needed.  On Monday February 26, 2018 at 5 p.m. in City Hall, the City Council will discuss a policy resolution proposing amendments to the following sections of the Land Use Code: Miscellaneous Supplemental Regulations (which includes Calculations and Measures), Parking and Mobility, Growth Management, Nonconformities, Accessory Dwelling Units, Variances, Signs, View Planes, and Zone Districts.  The public is encouraged to attend this Policy Resolution meeting, which is the first step in the three-step code amendment process.

Each of these amendments is targeted to respond to errors in the code, changes in development practices, and coordination with other sections of the code.  Every few years, the Planning Department proposes a wide range of clean-ups and minor amendments to the code to ensure that the regulations continue to deliver the kind of development the community expects.  The last update was done in 2015.  If you have questions about the proposed amendments or would like to submit comments, you may contact Phillip Supino, Long-Range Planner, at 970.429.2767 or phillip.supino@cityofaspen.com.

Affordable Housing Mitigation Rate

City Council has directed staff to update the cash-in-lieu rates for affordable housing mitigation.  Affordable housing mitigation is required for numerous development activities in the City.  Cash-in-lieu is one of a handful of ways that development can meet its affordable housing requirements.  The current and proposed rates for various categories of affordable housing are shown in the following table:

The rate changes will be considered by City Council at the February 26, 2018 City Council meeting.  The public is encouraged to attend.  You may contact Phillip Supino, Long-Range Planner, at 970.429.2767 or phillip.supino@cityofaspen.com for more information.
